NORTHERN SPIRE BRIDGE - SUNDERLAND

First proposed in 2005 but the original design chosen in 2009 following a design competiton was substitied by a cheaper design in 2014. The earlier design proposal was unable to stay within its funding limits. It is located to the west of the city linking Castletown to the north with Pallion on the southern bank. it opened on 29 August 2018. Accommodating motor vehicles with 2 lanes in each direction, it has a shared footpath for cyclists and pedestrians it is 336 metres in length and 105 metres high.

The cost was £117.6m. The first design was by by Spence Associates in partnership with structural engineering firm Techniker. the design as built was by Roughan & O’Donovan and Buro Happold. Constructed by Farrans Construction and fabrication by Victor Buyck Steel Construction.
