Bridges On The Wear

EASTGATE CONVEYOR BRIDGE

An unusual industrial bridge which carried limestone and shale from a quarry up on the hillside south of the Wear to the LaFarge cement works opened in 1964 to be turned into cement. The cement works closed in 2002. Cement was moved by rail in special wagons until 1993, when it went by road. The conveyor on the bridge was originally enclosed.
