

This new Wear crssing, which connects the city centre with Shhepfolds and the Stadioum of Light, opening officially on 18th October 2025 although it opened temporarily on August 22nd for a women's rugby match at the Stadium of Light. It is a pedestrian and cycle bridge. Construciotn began in 2023 at VolkerStevin in Ghent, Belgian,the first wections of the bridge arriving on the Wear in August 2024. Construction continued with the erection of the central steel section and work on the concrete deckking was completed.The cost was about £31 million.

The footbridge is 260 metres long,10 metres wide and 30 metres above the river..in lenThere is a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro at the north end of the bridge called St Peters which gives views across the bridge to the tunnel and also of the adjacent road bridge. Until the late 20th cnetury the river near here was a hive of industry with coal staiths, shipyards and various engineering works in a two mile stretch of the Wear. Little remains of this but ships entering the port can be seen from the bridges. A footpath runs underneath on the north side in both directions.
